Pharmacist's Experience with Topamax for Migraines
I'm a pharmacist and pharmacy manager at Walgreens and fed up with how neurologists have treated me as well as others that I commonly visit with at the counter.
Tuliv researchers are completely right about Topamax as they have stated on the Tuliv web page.
One neurologist at the Headache Clinic had me taking 400mg of Topamax, along with about eight other prescriptions. None of them worked, and my neurologist acted like I was crazy when I told her!
And imagine trying to work as a pharmacist on all that crap!!...Especially the Topamax. That stuff made it impossible to speak, think or function. Add to that a bunch of other horrible medicines prescribed by neurologists and you have yourself one hot mess!!!!
I did my research and found your Migraine Defense product (thank God!!). As a pharmacist, I was never big on natural medications but it has really helped.
Thank you so much for all that you do for migraineurs!!
Sincerely, Rachelle
Your Brain on Topamax
Topamax was designed as an anti-seizure medication that alters the chemistry of your brain. Topamax works in the temporal lobes of the brain, which are separate from the actual migraine center. Altering brain chemicals in these areas can cause personality changes and can affect a person’s ability to think, make decisions, remember words and names, learn new things, and speak correctly. The higher the dosage, the more likely it is that these problems will occur.
According to reports submitted to the FDA, the functions most likely to be impaired include:
- cognitive reasoning
- short term memory
- attention
- concentration
- word formation
- and organization of thoughts
Altering the brain’s chemistry does not prevent migraines, and it can have dangerous side effects that can make it difficult to cope with everyday life.
Topamax Publication (7517114 02T566 © OMN 2005) lists only the most common adverse events that may occur while taking Topamax. These effects include:
- Cognitive/Neuropsychiatric Adverse Events
- Cognitive Related Dysfunction
- Psychiatric Behavioral Disturbances
- Somnolence and Fatigue
- Kidney Stones
The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires pharmaceutical companies to issue a Full Prescribing Information and Medication Guide for each drug. The Full Prescribing Information and Medication Guide for Topamax (topiramate) lists eye problems, suicidal thoughts, metabolic acidosis, birth defects including cleft lip or cleft palate, depression, violent tendencies, and poor impulse control among the dangerous side effects associated with Topamax.
Physician’s Desk Reference (PDR) lists a litany of adverse side effects including anxiety, hallucinations, headache, hearing difficulties, hot flashes, impotence, increased sweating, irritable bladder, joint pain, kidney stones, low sex drive, mood swings, confusion, depression, difficulty with memory, menstrual problems, mood problems, personality problems, double vision, drowsiness, fatigue, language problems, speech problems, tingling or burning sensations, tremors, weakness, and weight loss.Is Topamax Safe for Children? How Well Does Topamax Work for Migraines?
If Topamax were highly effective in preventing migraines, it seems reasonable that many people would gamble the risks of adverse side against the hope of relief from devastating pain. But according to Topamax’s own research, it only works about 35 percent of the time. In a trial of 1,700 people suffering an average of 5.5 migraines per month, a daily dose of 200mg of Topamax reduced the number of migraines by an average of 2 per month at the end of the six-month trial. According to Topamax’s prescribing information, users need to take Topamax for at least six months in order to see if it will even work.
It is recommended that a patient take Topamax for 26 weeks, gradually increasing the dosage to 400 mg per day. At the end of that period, Topamax is considered to be “working” if it is effective at preventing migraines 37 percent of the time. In other words, even if it fails nearly two-thirds of the time, it is considered to be effective at the end of 26 weeks.
In contrast, Migraine Defense can show excellent results in four to six weeks and can often help users live migraine free.
