Migraine Research
Migraine Research
In 1999, we started a privately funded migraine research project seeking to discover the underlying biological cause of the migraine condition. The culmination of many years of collaborative migraine research resulted in many new discoveries that finally lead to the development of the first migraine product that directly addresses the natural cause of migraines.
Our research brought about a new understanding of how the migraine syndrome works and provided refreshingly new answers to the question of what happens in the body to cause a migraine to occur. In addition, this research revealed the patterns of migraines at various stages in life and why migraines occur at certain times of the day.
In collaboration with migraine studies from universities and hospitals around the world, our team was able to define the factors involved in migraines:- Genetic. The migraine condition is inherited as a gene found within the mitochondria of specialized cells that are capable of producing hormones. In other words, the migraine syndrome is an inherited condition, most dominantly on the maternal side. The migraine syndrome can skip generations and therefore it may be difficult to always pinpoint other family members with the migraine syndrome.
- Hormonal. The word hormone is derived from a Greek word that means to "set in motion." Prior to and during the occurrence of a migraine, specialized hormones called "messenger hormones" are active in the body, giving commands for the production of other hormones including progesterone, estrogen, and androgen. This hormone activity triggers the migraine syndrome that causes headaches. For this reason many migraines are cyclical in relation to the hormonal rhythms of the body. Both female and male bodies have the same hormones in different proportions.
- Chemical. Migraines are associated with the release of the chemicals CGRP and CGMP, inflammatory neuropeptides which cause vasodilation. The dilation of blood vessels surrounding the trigeminal nerves in the head causes the headache pain when the migraine syndrome is triggered. CGRP is created from a chemical reaction between nitric oxide and other elements. Tuliv Migraine Defense is a considered an anti-CGRP migraine product and has set the standard in this approach.
- Triggers. External and internal triggers set into motion chemical reactions that produce CGRP and result in headaches. Triggers contain or stimulate the production of the basic elements needed to start a migraine. Nitric Oxide, along with certain amino acids including, L-tyramine and L-arginine, are often seen as major triggers of migraines. Many foods, drinks, medications and other products become triggers by elevating nitric oxide levels in the body. See Triggers for more information.
- Unisex. Migraines occur in both sexes in relatively the same way and for the same reasons:
- Both the male and female body contain the exact same types of hormones in different proportions.
- The migraine gene is found in the DNA of both sexes.
- Specific gland activity controls the hormone productions in both sexes.
Life Stages and Cyclical Events
Ultimately our research focused on the relationship between the hormone secretions from the pituitary gland and the correlating occurrence of migraines. It is the pituitary gland that controls many life stages and cyclical events of the body. The pituitary gland produces the hormones that start puberty, which often coincides with the initial onset of migraines. These hormones also affect a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle and pregnancy, reproductive functions, and menopause. Both men and women are affected by the fluctuation of hormones. See Migraine Stages and Patterns.
Our evidence from numerous studies indicates that these life events coincide with migraine occurrences, demonstrating that migraines are related to hormone changes or fluctuations in the body controlled by the pituitary gland. Even though these changes are controlled by the pituitary gland, that one gland itself is not the problem when it comes to migraines.
Our research concluded that a specialized migraine formula designed to manage the factors preceding a migraine could control or stop the onset of a migraine headache for both males and females. Tests proved the formula used in Migraine Defense is effective in controlling migraines.

The Science - Why MD Works So Well
Natural Biology Makes MigraineDefense Work
Tuliv Migraine Defense has a high success rate because it works on the biological causes of migraines rather than dealing only with the symptoms. By combating the causes of migraines, this all natural migraine formula stops migraines before they can start.
Tuliv Migraine Defense works because it:
- blocks production of migraine-producing chemicals,
- breaks migraine patterns, including rebound headaches, and
- creates biological defense against future migraines.
By controlling migraines, Tuliv Migraine Defense can give you a migraine-free life.
The Science
Cause of Migraine
For over a decade, migraine researchers have known the genetics of migraines and acknowledged the hormone connection to migraine occurrences. Today migraine science can safely say that most migraines occurring in men, women, and children result from changes in hormone production or happen at unpredictable times when influenced by other triggers.
After years of studying migraines, the researchers at Tuliv discovered how the factors of a migraine—including the chemicals, migraine gene, specific hormones and proteins, and external triggers—interact in the body to cause migraines. Understanding these interaction enabled them to further study how migraines can be controlled which led to development of the first migraine product designed to use the body's natural defense mechanisms against the actual cause to control migraines - Tuliv Migraine Defense.
Chemical Reactions are the Keys to Migraines
Although a migraine can be triggered internally or by an outside influence, the actual mechanism that causes a migraine headache is a combination of chemical reactions and synthesizing that results in the production and release of a neurochemical called CGRP.
CGRP causes the swelling of the blood vessels that are intertwined with tiny nerve endings of the trigeminal nerve located on both sides of the head. The result is a painful migraine headache with associated aura, nausea and vomiting.
Your DNA
Why are you susceptible to migraines? The reason may be found in your DNA makeup as an inherited gene. This gene is found in the mitochondria of specific cells. These cells are the hormone producing cells for estrogen and progesterone in both men and women.
These cells receive their production orders from what are called messenger hormones that are produced and secreted by the pituitary gland.
How Do Hormones Cause Migraines?
Hormones themselves do not cause migraines, much in the same way that gasoline, in and of itself does not make a car go. Gasoline makes the engine run, which rotates the transmission gears, which makes the wheels turn. In a similar way, hormones start a reaction or a process that leads to a migraine.
To say that estrogen or progesterone is the cause of a migraine is a misunderstanding of the effect of hormones on migraines. This misunderstanding has led to the prescribing additional hormones as a treatment for migraines. We can readily see the adverse effect of hormones on migraine when we realize that birth control pills, which are hormones, often cause migraine headaches.
What Controls the Migraine Pattern?
Understanding a migraine is found by studying the path of a migraine from its beginning.
Migraines occur after specific messenger hormones are secreted from the pituitary gland into the blood stream and are received by the cells containing the migraine genes. For reasons that are still unknown, there is an adverse reaction in these cells that causes the production of the neurochemical CGRP. CGRP is the chemical involved in a migraine headache and what abortive medications such as Imitrix target.
Mechanics of a Migraine
Migraines occur outside the brain in what is called the trigeminal nerve vascular system. Those who have had migraine headaches can easily draw the path of this system as it starts at the temples and runs forward to branch out behind the eyes and down the jaw line. This system is comprised of hair-like nerve fibers that are intertwined with tiny blood vessels.
The pain of a migraine headache occurs when these tiny blood vessels dilate and begin to swell and expand to the point where they put pressure on the nerve endings. We often feel throbbing pain as the blood fills these vessels and they pinch nerves.
The neurochemical CGRP causes the blood vessels to dilate and expand. To make matters worse, when the nerve fibers become irritated, they react in a way that can cause an increase in the level of CGRP in a round-robin effect that increases the pain level and the duration of a migraine attack.
To learn more see the Tuliv Migraine Research page.
Hormone Patterns Become Migraine Patterns
Even though hormones are exactly the same for men and women, it is easier to see the hormonal cause of migraines in women than in men because of women’s monthly menstrual cycle.
Menstrual cycles are controlled by the pituitary gland. Remember this is the gland that secretes the messenger hormones that are received by the cells containing the migraine gene that starts the production of CGRP.
There is nothing wrong with the pituitary gland or the hormones; rather, it is what occurs after these hormones, mainly LH and FSH for both men and women, are received by the specialized cells that contain the migraine gene.
In addition to hormones from the pituitary gland, Tuliv research has also identified two other glands and hormones involved in triggering migraines. The pineal gland secretes melatonin, and the adrenal gland secretes cortisol. Melatonin is involved in migraines that occur around 4:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Cortisol is related to stress headaches and possibly morning migraines.
Tuliv research found that migraine attacks directly correlate with the patterns of hormone secretions that occur in the body at various times of day, during the course of a month, and at various stages of life. For more information, see Migraine Patterns.
Natural Cause, Natural Solution
Understanding the involvement of hormones in migraines and their effect on migraine patterns provided Tuliv researchers the insight needed for the development of the first and only migraine product that addresses the natural cause of migraines - Tuliv Migraine Defense. This all-natural migraine formula works on the causes of migraines. It does not attempt to treat the symptoms of migraines; rather, it keep s them from ever starting.

Triggers
Triggers
Knowing what triggers your migraines and a little understanding of why they start a migraine can help you avoid the pain of a headache. First you need to realize that there are both external and internal migraine triggers.
Internal Triggers. Because of your inherited the migraine gene, certain natural functions of the human body can trigger a migraine. Hormones top the list of internal triggers. Other internal triggers include the chemicals your body produces when get hot, see irritating lights, exercise, and when the weather changes.
External Triggers. Certain substances ingested or that come in contact with the body that can bring about a migraine attack are called external triggers. These triggers may vary for each person, but common triggers include smells, foods, various ingredients, drinks, prescription drugs, and even health fads such as probiotics. There are also triggers that appear to be universal to all people who get migraines (migraineurs) and they include red wine and MSG (monosodium glutamate).
Eliminating Triggers. Since it is virtually impossible to eliminate and avoid all types of migraine triggers, the best solution for a migraine-free life is taking a migraine preventive such as Tuliv Migraine Defense.
The NO Connection
Nitric Oxide or NO, is perhaps the most prevalent of all triggers and yet the least know about. Nitric oxide by itself is a vasodilator so powerful that can cause a headache even for a person who has never experienced a migraine.
NO combined with other substances turns into the chemical that causes migraines. For example, Nitric Oxide + Tyramine = Migraine (see more about avoiding tyramine below).
This can become complicated for migraine sufferers who try to maintain a healthy lifestyle, as many products considered good for your health are actually migraine triggers. Probiotics supplements and programs, for example, are considered to be helpful for digestion and gastrointestinal health. However, probiotic products raise the level of nitric oxide in the body to the point where they can trigger a migraine headache.
Other factors that produce NO in the body include:
- Ferment products, yogurt, cheese, and similar food products
- Acidophilus and products containing acidophilus
- Viagra and other male enhancement products
- Vigorous activities such as exercise naturally elevate the level of NO and that is why migraines can occur about an hour after a person has finished a work out.
Other Factors Contributing to Your Migraines
Hormone Replacement Therapy
Many women have been prescribed or use hormone replacement therapy (HRT), such as estrogen and progesterone, in attempts to control migraines or block the symptoms of menopause. Mayo Clinic migraine research studies, have demonstrated that adding hormones can actually result in an increase in migraine frequency and intensity. Unfortunately, since the connection between hormones and migraines is not very well understood by most doctors, HRT is often ignored as the cause.
Tuliv Hormone Peace is a safe and affective aid for menopause and does not add hormones to the body.Pharmaceutical Drugs
Headache is a common side effect of many pharmaceutical drugs. Birth control pills and other hormone-based contraceptives top the list of drugs that cause or contribute to migraine problems.
You should never take for granted that your doctor knows the side effects of a drug or that he or she has knowledge about how it affects a person with migraines. Just because it is prescribed by a doctor doesn't mean that it won't cause a migraine.
If you start a new drug and you get more headaches, do not be easily persuaded that the drug is not the cause of your new headaches. Read the information that comes with your prescription or go online to see if headache or migraine is a side-effect of the drug.Ingredients, Food Products, Drinks and Other Thing to Avoid
Substances to Avoid - Click on individual trigger to reveal reason.
-
Acidophilus
Acidophilus, found in yogurt and other products, can be a problem for some people who get chronic migraine headaches. If you are eating yogurt regularly, stop for ten days and see if that has an effect on the frequency or severity of your headaches. Trigger Reason: Acidophilus increases level of nitric oxide -
Airborne
Airborne and other cold and flu remedies containing glutamine and lysine. -
Arginine, L-Arginine
Arginine is a precursor of nitric oxide, which causes blood vessel relaxation (vasodilatation). Arginine is an amino acid that is essential for children but not for adults. According to the Mayo Clinic, most people likely do not need to take arginine supplements because the body usually makes sufficient amounts. Trigger Reason: Elevates Nitric Oxide in body -
Artificial Sweeteners
You should avoid all artificial sweeteners and the products that contain artificial sweeteners as most can be migraine triggers. According to market analysts, by the end of 2007 there were nearly 5,000 products sold in the US containing artificial sweeteners. Read labels of drinks including bottled teas, flavored waters, sports drinks, etc. and avoid all artificial sweeteners. -
Cheese - including cream cheese
Cheese contains tyrosine which can be problematic. All aged and mature cheeses contain high levels of tyramine. Since it is impossible to know the exact tyramine content, all cheeses should be avoided. This includes, but is not limited to, cheddar, Swiss, blue cheese, mozzarella, parmesan, Romano, cheese spreads, cheese casseroles or any foods made with cheese. You may want to try "Better than Cream Cheese" by Tofutti -
Colon Cleansing
Many colon cleansing products use acidophilus and other such ingredients that often trigger migraine headaches by elevating the level of nitric oxide in the body. For a quick and thorough cleanse you may want to consider buying a bottle of MagCitrate which can be purchased OTC at a discount or drug store (read label). . -
Diet Drinks and Diet Sodas
Products that use the words diet, no sugar, etc. should be avoided because these generally contain an artificial sweetener. You really have to read the labels of the products you drink, even those that sound healthy. -
Exercise and Muscle Enhances
Many products that are sold as exercise or muscle enhancers contain high amount of ingredients on the trigger list that will cause migraine headaches. Products of this type include such products as, Xyience XNO is a product sold for “anyone who wishes to extend their muscle pump; signal muscle growth and speed recovery; and increase their strength, stamina and sexual vigor.” XNO increases Nitric Oxide (NO) – increasing NO can cause migraine -
Fermented products
Fermented products often trigger migraines, which is perhaps due to the higher levels of polyphenolic. Wines, especially red wines, aged cheese, yogurt, cream cheese and other similar products that contain tyramine. -
Health Fads
People to get migraine headaches should approach health fads with extreme caution as they can easily disrupt the balance of one’s system and trigger migraines. If you are wondering about supplements or other things you may be taking, please feel free to call and ask or use the contact form on the right. -
Kampuchea Tea
Kampuchea tea is a fermented beverage prepared from a mushroom (Fungus japonicus). Although the drink is touted for its health-promoting properties. -
Meats
Meats that are smoked, aged, pickled, fermented, or marinated must be avoided. This includes, but not limited to, meat extracts, sausages or prepared meats, such as salami, bologna, pepperoni, frankfurters, bacon, bologna, liverwurst and ham as these contain tyramine and other additive that trigger migraines.
-
MSG - Monosodium glutamate
Monosodium glutamate (MSG). MSG is a food additive that is commonly marketed as a "flavor enhancer". Unfortunately this ingredient is disguised by other names including sodium glutamate, flavour enhancer 621, EU food additive code: E621, HS code: 29224220, IUPAC, 2-aminopentanedioic acid, 2-aminoglutaric acid, and product names such as Ajinomoto, Vetsin, or Accent, sodium salt of glutamic acid. When you see the words “Natural Flavorings”, beware that these may actually contain MSG. For more information on MSG go to http://www.msgmyth.com -
Probiotics
These products are often recommended for good health and to help avoid yeast infections. However, they can be very problematic for migraineurs because they increase the levels of nitric oxide in the blood flowing to the trigeminal-vascular system. A better alternative for avoiding yeast is our Tuliv product Ph Balancer
-
Proteinase enzymes
Concentrations of tyramine and histamine are higher in cheeses made from milk with neutral proteinase. Enzymes, such as pepsin, trypsin, or papain should be avoided. -
Protein Drinks, Bars and Tablets
These product often contain the amino acid L-tyrosine or have ingredients to boost Nitric Oxide levels in the body. -
Resveratrol
Resveratrol contains the same a polyphenol found in red wine and can trigger migraines for the same reason. -
Sunless Tanning Products
Sunless tanning products containing L-tyrosine. -
Tumeric
Turmeric - good or bad for migraines?
Turmeric is part of the ginger family of plants and is harvested and ground to a powder and often used as spice in cooking, especially East Indian food, perhaps more so through the use of curry powder which contains turmeric.
In the dietary supplement world, turmeric or to be exact, curcumin, the active ingredient found in turmeric, is known for its anti-inflammation properties. It has also has claims of being helpful for the relief of headaches.
It is thought that curcumin may have the ability to trigger the release of cortisone. Cortisone is the hormone released by the adrenal gland during stress.
Curcumin also increases the level of nitric oxide in the body and is often used for that purpose.
So, for the migraineur, Turmeric (curcumin) would appear to be helpful because it might be able to decrease the inflammation associated with migraines. However, it also causes an increase in the level of nitric oxide in the body, which is a bad thing for migraines as this is one of the chemicals needed in synthesizing CGRP, the chemical associated with migraines. Moreover, curcumin could also release cortisone, which is the hormone that triggers stress related migraines.
Our recommendation is to avoid Turmeric as it has the propensity to cause a migraine headache more so than to relieve one.
Nitric Oxide in Migraines Henry, LJ
-
Tyramine L-tyramine
Tyramine is a major component of what triggers a headache in the body. When combined with nitric oxide it creates a chemical called CGRP. CGRP is the chemical that causes the blood vessels of the trigeminal-vascular system to swell and put pressure on the nerve endings which results in the pain felt as a migraine headache. Protein-rich foods which have been fermented contain high levels of tyramine as do others including cheeses, fruit, processed foods, meat and fish, soy nuts and chocolate. Keep in mind that not everyone is affected by any one trigger. For a list of foods containing tyramine see -
Tyrosine, L-Tyrosine
Tyrosine (abbreviated as Tyr or Y) or 4-hydroxyphenylalanine is one of the 20 amino acids that are used by cells to synthesize proteins. Tyrosine can be synthesized by the body to create tyramine (see above). Tyrosine is often found in the protein building drinks used as part of an exercise program. Be sure to check labels. This is one you should try to avoid. -
Viagra and other Erection Enhancers
Viagra and other prescription erectile drugs expand blood vessels and cause headaches for those who suffer from migraines. OTC erectile enhancing products do this by releasing nitric oxide (NO) into the body which become migraine trigger. Many of these product contain L-arginine as the ingredient to increase NO which causes migraines. -
Wine
Wines, especially red wines, should be avoided as they contain tyramine and exacerbate the migraine syndrome. -
Yeast, brewers and extracts
This group to avoid includes brewers yeast, extracts such as marmite, and fresh homemade yeast leavened breads. Yeast found in prepared foods, soups, canned foods and frozen foods, should be checked for the addition of yeast abstracts and should be avoided. -
Yogurt
Yogurt contains high levels of acidophilus. If you eat yogurt to avoid yeast, consider taking Coral Calcium or Tuliv pH Balancer to help balance your pH and avoid yeast infections. Probiotics – Often found in yogurt or supplements, probiotics increase NO (nitric acid), and many also contain tyramine. Try Tuliv pH Balancer to help prevent yeast without causing migraine.
Read Labels and Ask Questions
Learning to read labels can be one of the easiest ways to prevent migraines. Check the ingredients of everything you consume or put on your skin. Eileen suggests using the grandma rule: "If your grandmother didn't use it as an ingredient in her cooking, then why would you want to eat it now?"
Before ordering food from a menu or a buffet, always ask if any of the foods contain MSG. If the server doesn't know, then get up and leave—don’t take a chance. When in doubt, don't eat it, whether the food in question is a restaurant entree or your best friend's favorite dish at the pot-luck dinner.
Repairing the Long Term Effects of Migraines
Migraines tax the body, and neck muscles and joints become tense, sore, and strained. Pain and tension are often misdiagnosed as the cause, rather than the result, of migraines.
To help with the after-effects of migraines, Migraine Defense contains borage oil, an ingredient used by the body to generate natural anti-inflammatories to relieve inflammation in the body. You can also order our Tuliv T-Ease product to increase these anti-inflammatory effects.Triggers can be confusing
Sometimes it is difficult to determine what is triggering your migraines. For example, do you know why you may wake up at 4 AM with a throbbing migraine? We do. Call us toll free at 1-866-367-5953 or send an email to Questions@Tuliv.net.

Information for Women
Your Hormones and Migraines
For many years migraine researchers have known there is a hormone connection to migraines. Our research advanced that by identifying their roles in the timing of migraine occurrences.
Now we can safely say that most migraines occurring in women and girls are caused by how specific cells in the body react to hormone changes - although you may be surprised to learn what kind of hormones are involved.
Body Chemistry - the Key to Migraines.
Migraines occur during times when hormone levels fluctuate in the body. The times in life when this happens the most is during puberty, during the menstrual cycle and even more sporadically during the time of perimenopause (years leading up to menopause) when hormones really fluctuate and may be noticed by such symptoms as hot flashes and night sweats. [If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we highly recommend you get relief with Tuliv Hormonal Peace.]
Which Hormones?
When the word hormone is mentioned, most women think estrogen and progesterone. Although these are the major hormones, they are not exactly the hormones that cause the migraines to occur. The real villains are what are called "messenger hormones."
They are called messenger hormones because they deliver messages for various functions in the body to occur. For example, the hormones LH and FSH give the orders to start and stop a women's period and time the ovulation. These hormones come from the pituitary gland which is located just under the front part of the brain directly behind the bridge of your nose.
Since periods are regulated by hormones, migraines happen around the high points of the menstrual cycle. Any woman who has had migraine headaches in the days just before her flow starts knows that these days can produce among the worse of headaches - all caused by hormones.
As mentioned, the start of perimenopause is regulated by the pituitary gland and generally begins sometime between the age of 35 - 45 and for this reason migraines become more intense and severe, have longer durations and happen more frequently.
Why Don't All Women Get Migraines?
The reason some women get migraines (about 12% of the population) and others don't can be found in their DNA makeup. In other words, you have inherited a gene that causes migraines. This gene is located within the very cells that receive the messenger hormones and are the same cells that produce estrogen and progesterone.
More Body Chemistry
Certain cells that have the migraine gene operate slightly different than the same type of cells found in women who don't get migraines. These cells produce the hormones correctly but also cause the body to produce a chemical called CGRP that in turn makes the head hurt by causing the tiny filaments of a nerve that is located on each side of the head to become inflamed with pain. This is what is felt as a migraine headache and why it forms on one side of the head and the pain feels like it moves forward behind the eyes.
Hormone Patterns Become Migraine Patterns
We discovered most of the aforementioned while studying migraines and went on to map the headache patterns of hundreds of women to realize that there are actually several different types of hormones that can trigger migraines at various times of day, month and throughout high hormone events in life.
These other hormones don't cause the migraines on there own, but rather act as triggers to ignite a headache at 4 AM in the morning or a produce a tension like headache after a stressful day or week.
For more information, see Migraine Patterns.
Best News For Women
In 2003, we had a terrific breakthrough in migraine research. After we had written our reports on migraines and felt we had found the chemistry and biological cause (see research) we started on discovering a way to prevent migraines. Our goal was to stop and prevent the migraines for one person. A person named Eileen Walsh who had had to that point 43 years of migraine suffering. Her pattern fit perfectly into the hormone theory and two of her doctors felt we were on the right track. We had confirmed our ideas with Dr. Coleman a neuroendroncrinologist from Harvard that we had been introduced to who encouraged us to look to nature for solutions.
Within a year we put together an all natural formula that ended Eileen's migraines. Tule Migraine Defense was originally developed for a woman just like you.
